Course Summary
This professional development
course introduces faculty and their collaborative teams to the knowledge,
skills and resources they need to successfully plan and teach a section of
Freshman Seminar. It includes an introduction to the highly impactful
pedagogies used in the Freshman Seminar program and an introduction to the
relevant literature on these high impact practices.

Outcomes
Participants will…
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the purpose, format and
common requirements of the Freshman Seminar
2. Be conversant with relevant literature linking high
impact practices to improved student success
3. Use the resources available to them for planning their
course activities
4. Develop a syllabus and schedule for use in fall 2017
5. Apply effective collaboration
skills in working with their teams
Requirements
Faculty must successfully
complete this faculty development course in order to teach in the Freshman
Seminar program. A combination of presentations, workshops and “team time” will
give participants opportunities to develop and apply the required knowledge and
skills. During the training, faculty will develop course materials in
collaboration with the program’s campus collaborators. Unless otherwise indicated, readings and homework activities may be completed after the training sessions.
Successful Completion of the Course
Successful completion of this course means that mastery
of the above Outcomes is evident in:
ü A syllabus. Submission of course syllabus is required
by May 3, 2019
ü A schedule. Submission of a schedule of course
activities is required by May 3, 2019
Average Participant Workload Expectations
Course time consists of 4 hours for faculty new to the program, and 2 hours for returning faculty. Participants new to the program should plan to engage in approximately 1 hour of preparation for each hour spent in the training. Course assignments are made in accordance with this expectation.
Compensation
In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, these required activities are compensated as follows:
Full time faculty: This course is considered part of the normal contract workload for FT faculty.
Part time faculty: PT faculty members receive a standard stipend each semester they teach at NDNU. This course is part of the activities for which the standard stipend was issued. PT faculty members who are not teaching at least one class in Spring 2019 will receive a separately-issued stipend.
